A Journey to South Africa: Land of Contrasts and Miracles

Oct 1 – 14, 2015

Travel with Richard Woodward, VMFA Curator of African Art, on a special adventure of South African art and culture  planned exclusively for VMFA Member Travel (limited enrollment).

We will begin in bustling Johannesburg with visits to the Wits Art Museum, the Soweto Township, and Liliesleaf Farm, the secret hideout of the apartheid resistance movement. From Johannesburg we fly to the coastal city of Durban, where we will visit Ohlange High School, established in 1901 by Zulu leader John Dube, modeled after Virginia’s Hampton Institute. We will visit the Phoenix Institute, established by Gandhi, and learn about his development of passive resistance during his years in South Africa. In Capetown, we will visit iconic Table Mountain, historic Robben Island, and have an entire day devoted to art. Our trip concludes back in Johannesburg, with an optional three-night, post trip: a spectacular game-viewing safari.

Fee: $8,345, air not included, but group air will be available.
