  • From 2001 to 2014, 58 percent of applicants were from Central Virginia, with the next highest percentage (15 percent) from Northern Virginia.
  • The number of Fellowship applications increased by 37 percent between 2009 and 2014.
  • Between 2001 and 2014, the average number of recipients per year was 34.
  • Throughout the history of the program, 127 artists have received more than one Fellowship, with 27 receiving three or more. (Starting in 2007, artists were not allowed to receive more than three Fellowships in one category.)
  • Many recipients have subsequently shown their work. Of those surveyed, 92 percent said they had shown their work as part of a group gallery show and 71 percent solo. In museum exhibitions, 49 percent had their art appear with other artists’ work compared to 23 percent having their work exhibited on its own.
  • 59 percent of recipients surveyed said winning a Fellowship increased public visibility for their work.
