Registration for VMFA Members
To accommodate the high demand, members-only registration for the following categories will begin as noted:
Studio School and Art History Classes (ages 16+)

Visitor Services is available by phone 804.340.1405 starting at 8 am or in-person at the museum starting at 10 am on registration days.
Expand your creativity and artistic awareness, build your own portfolio for college, or simply spend time with peers and professional artists through these studio classes related to VMFA’s world-renowned collection. Enrollment is limited in order to provide individual instruction and accommodations for teenagers of all skill levels. Register online or by phone 804.340.1405.

Teen Studio Programs

$50-70 (VMFA Members $40-60)
Focus on your favorite style, medium, or technique in one or all of these innovative classes. Designed for teens in middle or high school, these classs help students grow creatively, explore self-expression, and develop works for a college portfolio.

[TW2] Cosplay: Sewing Series
Wednesdays, Oct 2, 9, & 16, 5–7 pm (3 sessions) | Pauley Center, Studio A

Ages 13–17 |Learn basics sewing techniques to fabricate your own cloak, hat, and faux leather pouch to enhance your cosplay clothing or start a new costume. Draw inspiration from your imagination and favorite characters, alongside portraits and textiles from VMFA galleries.

[TW3] Digital: Moviemaking
Wednesdays, Nov 6, 13, & 20, 5–7 pm (3 sessions) | Pauley Center, Computer Lab

Ages 13–17 | Tour VMFA galleries to capture video and stills of artwork, creating visual stories inspired by the collections. Learn camera techniques, digital editing, and audio work while exploring narrative storytelling or documentary moviemaking. Students are encouraged (but not required) to bring their own flash drive and headphones. All other equipment will be provided.

[TW4] Design: Resin Crafting
Wednesdays, Dec 4 & 11, 5–7 pm (2 sessions) | Art Education Center, Studio 1

Ages 13–17 | Enjoy the art of resin making! Experiment with basic techniques, molds, and additives to make funky charms and other fun creations perfect for adding to your choice of a phone case or an art board.

Explore the galleries and boost drawing skills associated with different art movements, styles, and cultures. Designed for teens in middle or high school, monthly sessions include demos, art talks, and independent instruction to accommodate both beginning and accomplished artists.

Ages 13–17 | Find inspiration in everyday objects. Create your own compositions and use perspective and value to capture a variety of shapes and surfaces.

Ages 13–17 | Discover the basics of how hand-drawn graphics can visually communicate ideas.
Push the boundaries of text and other design elements to create unique cards, gift tags, and more.

Each of these innovative workshops focuses on a unique art movement, culture, and medium associated with the VMFA collection. Teenagers benefit from learning new techniques and using a variety of professional tools and materials.

Ages 13–17 | Using a variety of tools, paints, and mixed media, explore both traditional and non-traditional techniques to create expressive still life paintings.

[TS3] Digital: Art 101
Saturday, Nov 9, 1–4 pm | Pauley Center, Computer Lab
Anh Do
Ages 13–17 | Develop a basic understanding of digital tools through exploratory exercises needed to create digital artworks and learn about careers and software for this virtual medium. Students are encouraged (but not required) to bring a flash drive for saving files.

[TS4] Painting: Mini Pet Portraits
Saturday, Dec 7, 11 am–4 pm | Pauley Center, Studio A

Ages 13–17 | Unleash your creativity and capture the charm of your favorite animal! Learn how to paint pet portraits on small-scale canvases that capture each pet’s unique features and character. Students are encouraged to bring printed photographs of their pets or favorite animals. Students will also need to bring a bag lunch from home; no peanut products, please.
