The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts seeks an experienced, talented, and energetic leader to serve as its next Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This CFO also serves as the Chief Financial Officer for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Foundation.
At this exciting point in the institution’s growth, VMFA seeks an entrepreneurial, strategic, and solutions-oriented CFO to lead the institution’s financial strategy and operations. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced, collaborative finance and administrative professional to continue strengthening infrastructure systems needed to support the Museum’s and the Foundation’s continued success, financial sustainability, and growth as it embarks on a new chapter of service and expansion to the Commonwealth of Virginia and its citizens.
The CFO is responsible for comprehensive strategic and operational leadership of the financial management for the Museum and its entities and plays a critical role in both day-to-day operations and long-term financial strategy development and implementation. Reporting directly to the CE Director, the CFO provides accounting, budgetary, operational and programmatic support to all Museum programs and activities. The CFO is responsible for the management of the Museum’s finances and investments, directing the day-to-day accounting and related financial activities of the Museum to ensure sound fiscal administration and legal compliance for the museum and associated entities. As a key organizational leader, the CFO offers sound analysis to recommend and establish appropriate policies and procedures to safeguard the assets and resources of the Museum. The CFO is responsible for ensuring the museum business processes are effective and agile, and will be engaged in continuing to look for innovative and creative ways to implement process and service improvements.
Serving as a thought leader on all business and operational matters, the Chief Financial Officer will work in partnership with the Museum Director and Senior Leadership Team to provide strategic direction, leadership, and management toward advancing efforts for improved organizational processes and systems. They will be relied upon for proven leadership capabilities, good business judgment, an analytical mindset, and sound and influential decision-making abilities. The CFO will be a strategic partner to the Director, conceptualizing and analyzing problems and solutions in a proactive, constructive, creative, and transparent manner that results in improved performance across the organization. A valued partner, the CFO works closely with the Boards for both the Museum and the Foundation, as well as several Board committees, to provide analysis, oversight, and sound management of the Museum’s fiscal assets across its various entities.
The CFO will manage the daily operation of the following departments: Accounting/Finance, Budget, Procurement and the Agency Risk Management and Internal Control (ARMICS) program. This position directly oversees and supervises 14 staff members and serves as an active member of the Senior Leadership Team helping to develop and implement the Museum’s vision and mission.
The anticipated start date for this position is July 2022.

As one of the top comprehensive art institutions in the nation, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has embarked upon an exciting new chapter. VMFA has begun its $190 million expansion and renovation project led by the international architecture firm SmithGroup. Tentatively scheduled for completion in Spring 2026, the project consists of adding a new wing of more than 170,000 square feet and renovating approximately 45,000 square feet of existing spaces, while maintaining four acres of green space in the Sculpture Garden. Visitors will experience a seamless journey through the collections in the new wing, which will house 21st Century art, African art, American art, a new suite of galleries for special exhibitions, a new board room equipped with smart technology, and an events space that can seat up to 500 people. The expansion and renovation will enable the museum to display more art, welcome more visitors, and provide more enjoyment and enrichment for all.
The VMFA Foundation exists solely to support the activities of VMFA and to manage assets held in trust. Support provided by the VMFA Foundation helps the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret art as well as encourages the study of the arts, thus enriching the lives of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The CFO will possess a high level of business acumen and judgment, with the ability to make practical, realistic, data driven, and timely decisions and demonstrated experience in aligning budget strategies with the strategic goals of an institution. This individual will understand, analyze, and interpret complex problems and achieve sustainable solutions with the sophistication, creativity, advocacy, and openness needed to identify and implement new strategies to ‘get things done.’ This leader will be nimble, strategic, and collaborative at incorporating perspectives while informing decisions based on best practices across the Museum’s entities. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience generating creative solutions within a public organization and its constituents to assess, prioritize and operationalize organizational growth.

The Chief Financial Officer will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a confident, collaborative, and flexible approach to leadership. The CFO will be skilled at quickly establishing rapport and cultivating relationships across all levels of the organization including museum and foundation Board members, staff, peers, and the general public. Highly articulate and a deft communicator, the CFO will be able to synthesize divergent views and coalesce all constituents around a shared plan, and will work to establish regular, structured communication across the organization.
The CFO will foster trust and collaboration among team members and possess the ability to lead, facilitate, and communicate change with flexibility and poise. This leader has a positive attitude and sense of humor and is an individual with unquestioned integrity, ethics and values; someone who can be trusted with highly confidential and sensitive information. The CFO will be skilled at presenting financial information that is timely, accurate, and clear to a range of constituents with varying levels of expertise. The CFO will bring thoughtful and creative solutions to identify and hire talented teams across an organization through periods of growth.

A degree from a college or university with major studies in accounting, finance, business and public administration, economics, or a closely related curriculum.
CPA, MBA, and/or other related professional certifications and credentials are desirable.
