This position is for VMFA employees only. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is seeking a reliable, experienced individual to join the Visitor Services Department as a Gallery Associate Shift Supervisor. This is a quasi-full time, non-exempt position with benefits. This position works 32 hours per week, varied shifts during VMFA’s public hours as well as during after-hours events. VMFA is open 7 days a week from 10 am-5 pm with evening hours until 9 pm on Wednesday through Friday. Duties include:
The Gallery Associate Shift Supervisor provides support to the management and staff of VMFA by facilitating an environment of service excellence, ensuring the quality of visitor interactions in the galleries, and providing for the safety of both the visitors and the collection. This position supports the museum’s mission to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret art by providing leadership and training for the Gallery Associates and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the galleries. The supervisor promotes a safe and welcoming environment for visitors and staff, and supports staff by making schedule adjustments, providing information on museum activities, and responding to any customer service situations. They provide continuous training and coaching for staff on best practices and communicate feedback to management on ways to improve operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of customer service.
- Prior experience as a supervisor, preferably in a museum, hospitality, or retail environment.
- Ability to speak and hear, to use a two-way radio for communication, to observe visitors and staff in the galleries, to lift or move up to 10 pounds, and to traverse the museum for up to 8 hours, with reasonable accommodations.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to work special events from 5 pm-midnight.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to organize and oversee the work of a large and diverse staff; to conduct training for staff; to follow and give oral and written instructions; to react appropriately in routine and emergency situations; to communicate tactfully with a diverse population; and to gather information and write factual reports.
- Prior experience working in a museum and a comprehensive understanding of museum operations and museum security concepts and techniques, particularly special events operations.
- Open availability in the evening hours.
