IMLS Performing Arts Intern (Wage, Non-Exempt)

VMFA is pleased to announce an IMLS Performing Arts Internship for early Fall 2022. The intern will spend 8-10 weeks for roughly 15 hours per week learning about careers in museum education, researching and planning events, developing contracts, coordinating logistics, monitoring attendance, conducting intercept surveys for performances, and collaborating with other VMFA departments. The intern will also contribute as appropriate to the Museum’s blogs and social media outlets, present learning and work results to VMFA staff and when appropriate a wider audience, and share experiences with peers and community members to promote VMFA and opportunities in museum education and performing arts.

VMFA offers a vibrant array of Performing Arts Programs. Some are held weekly such as the beloved Jazz Cafénow on Wednesday evenings and After 5 Fridays on Friday evenings. Others are one-time offerings inspired by artwork in the permanent collection, special exhibitions, and/or community happenings. Performances may include live music, dance, theater, and other performing arts mediums. The IMLS Performing Arts Intern will work closely with the Performing Arts Coordinator and Education Department to help make these programs possible.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate should have strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences both orally and in writing; experience using Microsoft Office Suite and other computer programs; excellent organizational skills; and a willingness to learn, take initiative, and jump in where needed to support team efforts. Experience with event management and knowledge of performing arts communities and networks a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be in their third or fourth year of undergraduate studies with an interest in a potential career in performing arts, events management, community outreach, museum education, museum studies, or a similar field.

Additional Information

This position is being funded generously through an Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS): American Rescue Plan grant.

The position will pay $12.50/hour along with a $600.00 housing/living stipend. The position is expected to start around September 9, 2022, and go until the end of October 2022.

Selected candidate must pass a criminal history background check.
