Museum Exhibit Preparator (Painter)

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) seeks a dynamic and energetic individual to serve as a Museum Exhibit Preparator (Painter Specialty) in the Department of Exhibition Design & Production.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Support the Exhibitions Department in the presentation of the Museum’s collection and special exhibitions to its audiences both local and statewide.

Supply finishes, including paint, stain, varnish, epoxy and fabrics and other wall coverings, to all forms of exhibit construction, including walls, pedestals, and other casework, adhering to the high standard of quality and appearance that the Museum requires.

Perform maintenance painting in the galleries and all other spaces in and around the Museum building.

Assist with fabrication of display casework, pedestals, and architectural elements involved in the installation of the Museum’s temporary exhibitions and permanent gallery displays, adhering to the high standards of quality and appearance that the Museum requires.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of painting and other finishing techniques related to wall refinishing and display work (taping, mudding, patching and finishing casework). Considerable skill in the use of brushes, rollers, spraying and related tools and equipment. Ability to apply a variety of finishes to meet high museum quality standards.

Working knowledge of cabinetmaking and woodworking techniques. A working knowledge of museum exhibit fabrication and installation. Some knowledge of art conservation principles. Demonstrated ability to complete a wide range of painting and finishing projects. Able to work with tight deadlines and adapt to last minute changes and to know which are appropriate in
different situations.

Additional Considerations

Trade school or apprenticeship training in finishing techniques. Museum or gallery painting experience. Extensive experience with a wide range of painting tools and techniques. Skills in using various hand tools and power tools.
