VMFA is excited to host one of the many events of VCU’s annual Global Summer Institute of Music, an intensive summer program that brings talented young musicians from different cultures to Richmond and the campus of VCU. In keeping with the university’s mission for diversity and innovation, the Institute aspires to foster a unique environment for global cultural learning through artistic exchange.
Weaving together bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle, jazz, and minimalism, this multi-instrumental band presents a truly unique contemporary string quartet repertoire that has been described as “not classical. . .but not not classical.” Their pieces, which are all original, defy genre classification and simply must be experienced!
Organized by the Classical Revolution RVA and St. Edward Music Ministry, this free performance features singers and instrumentalists from across Richmond performing the music of Gabriel Faure (1845-1924), including Faure’s Requiem and the Cantique de Jean Racine, both frequently performed works of this great French composer. An excellent complement to Van Gogh, Manet, and Matisse: The Art of the Flower, these works illustrate the composer’s bold use of harmonies and exquisite sensitivity to melodic line, all within traditional musical forms.
