Lesson Concept: Windy Weather

Overview

Artists can use different lines and brushstrokes to show movement in their work. Vincent Van Gogh liked to paint outside. He painted this picture on a windy day. He used his brushstrokes in an energetic way that shows movement.

Think about standing outside on a windy day. What is moving around to tell you it is windy? How would it sound?

Look again at the swirls in Van Gogh’s painting to see how he pictured the wind. Can you move your hands like the wind?

Activities

1. Vincent Van Gogh often worked outside and therefore had to work rather quickly. Take paper and crayons outside. Do a series of three-minute drawings of your surroundings.

2. Practice making curved and wavy lines using a crayon or watercolors and a brush.

3. Make a sidewalk chalk drawing of a windy day.
