French Palaces and Châteaux: Private Collections

May 8–20, 2026

In the French regions of Normandy and the Loire Valley, walk in the footsteps of royalty and experience the riverscapes that have inspired artists and writers for generations. You’re invited to experience a lavish world where French royalty spared no expense, going behind the scenes of truly impressive châteaux they built amid Normandy’s coastal terrain and the Loire Valley’s fertile landscapes, popular among nobility as a hunting ground. Find out firsthand what it takes to own a palace and preserve its collections. Dr. Sylvain Cordier, VMFA’s Paul Mellon Curator and Head of the Department of European Art, will lead this very special adventure.

  • Embark on an exclusive journey through Paris, Normandy, and the Loire Valley, where you’ll gain behind-the-scenes access to some of France’s most magnificent châteaux and explore stunning gardens, with expert guidance and some elegant surprises fit for a royal.
  • Enter sections of the Château de Vincennes and the Château de Fontainebleau typically closed to the public, with exclusive access arranged through site officials.

  • Tour key sites across Normandy, including the opulent interiors of the Château du Champ de Bataille and the historic grounds of the Château de Dampierre.
  • Gain behind-the-scenes access to the chateaux of the Loire Valley, including the Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, noted for its early Renaissance proportions and riverside setting.
  • Observe history in the making at Guédelon, a medieval castle under construction using 13th-century techniques and materials, alongside a specialist who will contextualize the project’s methodology and historical sources.
