Wolstenholme’s four paintings show the wide range of hunting activity enjoyed by the British country gentry. In the Spring and Summer scenes, hunting is depicted as a social affair, with tents erected for the participants to enjoy a picnic lunch and leisurely conversation. The Autumn and Winter scenes follow the traditional hunting model of shooting, showing only hunters and their dogs. Sets of paintings of the four seasons were a major subject category in European art beginning in the Renaissance.
