The Egyptians depicted the goddess Sekhmet as either a lioness or a woman with a lion’s head; she was a vengeful and protective deity. When the royal residence moved to Thebes, the Egyptians combined the local goddess Mut with Sekhmet. This head probably belonged to a seated statue of Sekhmet from the sanctuary of Mut in Thebes, where hundreds of such figures were found.
