In this atmospheric painting, Boudin depicts a group of women in Finistère, the westernmost region of Brittany, participating in a pardon - ceremony undertaken with the hope of receiving blessings and forgiveness for sins. The women wear traditional Breton costumes, namely the distinctive white coiffes (starched lace headdesses). This is one of several paintings Boudin completed on this theme, including his first Salon entry in 1859.
