Architectural Revetment Showing a Banana Plant (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
The most characteristic of the refined decorative forms developed in the Mughal ateliers was the flowering plant isolated against a plain ground and frequently framed within an arch. This white marble panel, which would have been attached to a wall as part of a larger ornamental scheme, displays a similar motif. The choice of a banana plant instead of a flower at the center of its acanthus-leafed cusped arch, along with the small crocodile-like makaras from which the arch emerges, suggests that the panel was carved at a Mughal-influenced regional center rather than at the imperial workshop.
