A calligrapher and a civil official who served in the Qing imperial court in Beijing, Shen Wei witnessed the collapse of the Qing dynasty in 1911 and the chaotic years thereafter. Shen’s political and calligraphic accomplishments are noticeable in this two-line, standard-script couplet. The stable form, graceful strokes, and mixed ink tones convey Shen’s adherence to the precepts of Confucius's virtues, and his sentiments toward fleeting prosperity and remembrance.
