Called soban in Korean, meaning “small tray,” portable tables such as this were used to carry and serve food to individuals seated on the floor. A soban could also be used as a writing desk or small altar. This lacquered wood example is of the utmost quality, featuring intricate design motifs and superb craftsmanship. The crane, an emblem of immortality, is meticulously rendered alongside clouds, peach branches, and floral scrolls in mother-of-pearl inlay.
