An arhat is an enlightened being and a devoted follower of Shakyamuni Buddha. A rare 14th-century painting, this scroll depicts an arhat, most likely Ananda, with his hands clasped in prayer and his facial expressions conveying spiritual devotion. The bold brushwork and textile details reveal Chinese Yuan-dynasty tradition mixed with the Kamakura naturalistic style. The painting has been recently remounted with the support of the Sumitomo Foundation in Japan.
