Miyagawa Choshun was an accomplished ukiyo-e artist who depicted urban life with images of pleasure houses and courtesans. Here, a fashionable courtesan is dressed in a formal kimono with an overcoat. The layers of patterned garments are tied together in the front with a large sash, known as an obi. Her restrained expression and the family crest on the outer garment indicate her high-ranking status.
