Gyeongbokgung Palace is one of the primary royal residences in Seoul, South Korea. Construction of the palace began when the Joseon dynasty relocated the nation’s capital from Kaeseong to Seoul during the reign of King Taejo in 1394. Among more than two hundred structures in the palace is the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, a two-story building surrounded by a pond in the west of the palace. The pavilion served as the site of royal banquets for honorary guests and court officials. In this work, Hasui captures a winter view of the pavilion. The red building sits by the blue water in the falling white snow, exemplifying serenity and showcasing the natural beauty of the site.
