After studying in Cracow, Poland, and the Académie Julian in Paris, draftsman, illustrator, and printmaker Louis Marcoussis was introduced to the Cubist painters Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso and influenced by their art. Certain elements such as the geometric shapes in the design of this carpet are emblematic of Cubism. This carpet was originally placed in a stairwell on the ground floor of the French fashion designer Jacques Doucet’s studio in Neuilly, outside Paris.
