Gnathian pottery is quite different from the red-figure technique of most Greek vases of this period. On Gnathian ware, the entire surface of the vessel is covered with glaze to serve as background for additional decoration. The decoration of this wine jug features the mask of the “Courtesan,” one of the stock figures of ancient comedy.
