Informally positioned on the rocks of Monhegan Island, Maine, two figures serve as conduits for the vigorous play of color and light that punctuates the surface of this vibrant pastel. A departure from Henri’s realist urban portraits, Sketchers in the Woods reflects his study of color harmonies resonant in the combined richness of deep tones and pure light. Captivated by the effects, Henri prepared a number of pastels featuring the island’s Cathedral Woods, demonstrating his revived interest in impressionism. An ardent teacher, Henri inculcated an independent courage in his students, inspiring them to discover and master their own modes of expression.
