In the early Archaic period, as vase painters were experimenting with ways to depict the human form in two dimensions, sculptors were portraying figures both in the round and in relief. These reliefs from the island of Crete exemplify the tension between geometric and naturalistic renderings of the body. The same period witnessed an attention the human face rarely seen in earlier Greek art.
