Over the course of nearly seven years, Monet produced around 180 paintings while living in Argenteuil, the small suburb northwest of Paris where he took up residence in December 1871. Situated along a wide expanse of the River Seine with a conveniently located train station and newly rebuilt highway bridge, Argenteuil was equally picturesque and modern. As the town’s artist-in-residence, Monet completed canvases of its river and promenades, pleasure boats, factories, houses, and surrounding fields. Like other painters associated with the Impressionist movement, and following the example of avant-garde pioneers such as Courbet and Manet, Monet presents starkly modern subjects like the industrial stone and iron bridge that dominate this scene, a strong contrast to the pastoral, nostalgic landscapes of the Barbizon school.
