This lattice panel once belonged to either a pair at a door or a set of four at the window frames of a residential house, temple, or palace hall. Wooden panels of this type were covered from the inside with hanji—traditional Korean paper—and coated with bean oil. The wooden frame and paper helped control humidity and temperature in the building while also allowing light to fill the interior spaces. The panel was acquired in Seoul by the artist Bukang Kim, who donated it to VMFA. Two of her paintings—Silence and Interior—that depict this panel are also in the museum’s collection and are occasionally on display in this gallery.
Some object records are not complete and do not reflect VMFA's full and current knowledge. VMFA makes routine updates as records are reviewed and enhanced.
