This lattice panel once belonged to either a pair at a door or a set of four at the window frame of a residential house, temple, or palace hall. Wooden panels of this type were covered from the inside with hanji, traditional Korean paper, and coated with bean oil. The wooden frame and paper helped control humidity and temperature in the building, while also allowing light to fill the interior spaces. The panel was acquired in Seoul by the artist Bukang Kim, who donated it to VMFA. A number of her paintings, including Silence and Interior, which depicts this panel, are also in the museum’s collection.
