Humor and irony play central roles in Stettinius’s photography, as do implied narrative, a focus on the everyday world, and reference to photographic traditions. Combining all these parts, Mangini Studio Series is an ongoing series of mock self-portraits made in collaboration with another Richmond photographer, Terry Brown. Placing hair on center stage, the images offer a repertoire of character types. Described by Stettinius as “a prank run amok,” the series grew out of the artists’ shared nostalgia for the portrait studio session and Stettinius’s desire to send memorable follow-ups to galleries after meeting with them about his work. The prints are shown here inreadymade frames chosen by the artist.
