By the 4th century, Korean potters built wood-fired climbing chambers on the slopes and hills. These kilns could maintain a high temperature of more than 1800 degrees Fahrenheit (1000 degrees Celsius) to produce hard, sturdy stoneware. Examples of such ware and shards have been excavated from kiln sites and tombs in southeastern Korea, especially around Gyeongju, the capital of the Silla kingdom.
