Cast on both sides with the same designs of phoenixes and lotus, this small chime, kei in Japanese, is a ritual instrument that would have been suspended on a rack and placed in front of a temple altar. The kei was struck with a wood mallet. The lotus at the center of this kei served as a striking point for the mallet.
