Painter, printmaker, and member of the Postimpressionist Les Nabis movement, Pierre Bonnard found inspiration in Japanese ukiyo-e prints. The woodblock influence is evident in the flat picture plane and monotone color blocking of the figures in this piece, depicting a fashionable woman holding a magazine, accompanied by a newspaper boy. The poster advertises the popular, avant-garde arts and literary journal La revue blanche (The White Review), which was published by brothers Alexandre, Alfred, and Thadée Natanson.
