This painting depicts a biblical account from Maccabees in which the Syrian king Antiochus sets out to storm Jerusalem, ordering his charioteer not to stop until they had arrived. During the journey, the king suddenly became ill and fell from the chariot—a turn of events interpreted as an act of divine vengeance. This picture is the earliest known work by Hallé, who came from a family of history painters. It was painted during his first years in Rome at the French Academy and is typical of the neoclassical style promoted in that city.
