This statue, known as a kouros (Greek for “youth”), was made in an Etruscan workshop in Italy but under the influence of the Archaic style of Greek art. Kouroi are modelled on Egyptian depictions of males—they are intended to be seen frontally and stand with one foot forward, their weight equally distributed on both legs, arms at the sides and eyes looking straight ahead.
