Thoroughbred horses in England are traced back to three famous stallions. Here, Wootton probably shows Leedes, progeny of the Leedes Arabian, one of the original stallions. Leedes himself had an important influence on American breeding through his progeny Selima. Wootton here demonstrates his artistic sophistication by referring through the groom’s posture to a famous ancient statue – the Horse Tamer on the Quirinal Hill in Rome.
