Before a backdrop of exotic plants, a horseman struggles to keep his balance as a wild boar fells his horse. This dramatic sculpture is an example of Barye’s exotic hunt scenes, which depict combats between men and animals from such places as India, Africa, and the Near East. These sculptures, which present highly charged scenes of action and danger, reflect themes popularized by such Romantic artists as Eugène Delacroix, one of Barye’s close friends.
