The print publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō (1885–1962) gave the name shin-hanga, meaning “new prints,” to the works created by Hasui and his contemporaries. By bringing together the talents of artist, block carver, printer, and publisher, shin-hanga works mimicked the traditional collaborative process of ukiyo-e printmaking. Instead of the flat, stylized planes typical in ukiyo-e, the shin-hanga prints incorporated aspects of Impressionist paintings and prints, including perspective, light, and shading.
