Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road (Series Title)
東海道五十三次之內 御油 旅人留女 (Primary Title)
Utagawa Hiroshige 歌川広重, Japanese, 1797 - 1858 (Artist)
The stations of the Tokaido each boasted restaurants, shops, teahouses, and inns, eager to capitalize on the steady flow of weary travelers. In this scene, two men arriving at dusk in Goyu have stirred up competition between businesses, as female staff run into the road and aggressively pull the customers toward their shops. In a clever use of self-promotion, the names of the publisher, block carver, and printer of the Tokaido Road series are inscribed on the right side of the shop’s wall.
