The following artworks were approved by the VMFA Board of Trustees in June 2013. VMFA is a state agency and a public/private partnership. All works of art are purchased with private funds from dedicated endowments. After VMFA’s board approves proposed acquisitions on a quarterly basis, the art becomes the property of the Commonwealth of Virginia to protect, preserve, and interpret.

On May 18th, VMFA will offer free admission to the special exhibition Pop Art and Beyond: Tom Wesselmann as part of the American Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) Art Museum Day. The celebration complements International Museum Day, an annual worldwide event coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM).

American artist Tom Wesselmann is one of the leading figures in the American Pop Art movement with a career spanning more than four decades. Opening April 6, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts offers the first comprehensive North American retrospective of Wesselmann’s work. VMFA is the only East Coast venue for this exhibition.
