This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ Fellowship Program. With this year’s awards, fellowship grants will exceed a total of $5 million with 1,250 awards to Virginia artists since the program’s inception in 1940. The Virginia Museum awarded 27 fellowships to Virginia art students and professional artists in 2015-16 for a total of $162,000.

In honor of Black History month, VMFA will showcase both visual and performing African American artists. Maggie Ingram and the Ingramettes will perform on Feb. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. for the First Fridays program at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Since the 1940’s VMFA has sought works by African-American artists for the 19th, 20th, and 21st century collections.

The Richmond Art Region for which VMFA is the regional affiliate received 40 Scholastic National Art Awards, 9th in the total number of awards designated to any region out of the over 100 U.S. affiliates that received recognition. Virginia is served by the Southeast Region-at-large, and Arlington, Fairfax, Southwest, and Richmond Art regions.

Signs and protests were inseparable in the 1960s, with words painted or printed large scale to produce maximum impact when photographed or filmed by the media. Like a visual bullhorn, they both amplified and unified the voices fighting injustice. Ninety percent of the works featured in Signs of Protest: Photographs from the Civil Rights Era were acquired by VMFA in the past three years and emphasize the museum’s commitment to diversifying its photography collection.

Starting in January 2014, eight Richmond-based arts and cultural organizations will partner to facilitate community-wide conversations inspired by their respective exhibitions and programs. Participating institutions include Candela Books + Gallery, Anderson Gallery VCUarts, Black Iris, 1708 Gallery, Elegba Folklore Society, Reynolds Gallery, the Valentine Richmond History Center, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
