Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Named Travel Attraction of the Year by Southeast Tourism Society

During its recent Shining Example Awards ceremony, the Southeast Tourism Society (STS) named the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) the 2011 Travel Attraction of the Year. This marks the first time this prestigious award has been given to a museum and the third consecutive year the Richmond Region has received a Shining Example Award.

VMFA, VCU and 13 Charities to Receive $123 Million Bequest

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) jointly announced today the largest-ever cash gifts to both organizations totaling $115 million. The record gifts will help acquire additional works of art and support medical research. Thirteen additional charitable organizations will receive the remaining $10 million.

Picasso Exhibition Generated Nearly $30 Million for Virginia

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ landmark exhibition Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée Picasso, Paris brought more than just visitors to the Commonwealth. The exhibition brought $26.6 million to the Richmond region and a further $2.3 million across Virginia, totaling nearly $30 million.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced the 2011 RIBA International Awards for buildings displaying architectural excellence, and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is one of the 13 recipients, among only three United SS projects.

Governor McDonnell Signs Cultural Exchange between Virginia and China

Governor Bob McDonnell today signed an historic cultural exchange agreement to bring “Treasures from the Forbidden City,” a showcase of approximately 200 objects, from Beijing’s Palace Museum to Virginia in the summer of 2014. The Palace Museum signatory was its director, Zheng Xinmiao. Also attending were Alex Nyerges, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ director; Li Ji, Palace Museum executive deputy director; Robin Nicholson, VMFA deputy director for art and education; and Li Jian, VMFA curator for East Asian art.

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Returns Headdress to Native Tribe

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts returned a Kingfisher Fort Headdress (late 19th – early 20th century) to the Lúkaaxh.ádi clan of the Tlingit tribe of Alaska in March. This was the first repatriation of a Native American object by VMFA in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) of 1990.
