Kawase Hasui is known for his vivid winter landscapes. Zōjōji Temple in Tokyo was one of his favorite subjects. Over the course of his career, Hasui created several prints of this sacred site, constructed in the 9th century. In this 1929 version, he depicts a woman with an umbrella, walking in the snow in front of the temple. Contrasting colors and an atmospheric perspective in this snow scene demonstrate Hasui’s remarkable skills as both a printmaker and a colorist, as well as his ability to capture the essence of nature in his landscapes.
