As described in The Tale of Genji, Emperor Reizei loved paintings. To amuse him, a contest was held between court women. Genji was the guardian of Lady Akikonomu, in a red robe on the left, whose rival is a daughter of To-no-Chujo, on the right. Here, two parties are seated on both sides, while Prince Hotaru judges Lady Akikonomu’s final offering, a handscroll by Genji. This painting, depicting Genji’s life in the rural area of Suma, won the contest. In this album leaf, roofless architecture allows for an intimate look at the intricate figures and objects inside. Surrounded by gilded clouds, the painting shines with exquisite grace and delicacy.
