A leading Shanghai-School artist, Wu adored botanical subjects such as bamboo, orchids, and chrysanthemums, and drew inspiration from nature. The peony, an emblem of wealth, became his favorite subject later in life. In this work, Wu rendered peonies in various pink tones, leaves in a deep green, and rocks in mixed ink washes. The poem inscribed by Wu reveals his unique cursive writing style derived from archaic scripts on stone steles and bronze vessels.
