Cassandre, Ukrainian, active in Paris, 1901 - 1968 (Artist)
Cassandre’s career as a painter, graphic designer, poster artist, and stage designer began in Paris in 1923. His most iconic design, considered by many art historians as a masterpiece of Art Deco, is the poster for the SS Normandie. Such images helped sell the glamour and excitement of ocean liner travel. When the SS Normandie first set sail from Saint-Nazaire, France, in 1932, it was the largest and fastest steamship ever created. Completing its initial voyage to New York in record time, the Normandie became a national symbol of France’s leading position in the shipping industry.
