A Gallery Preview

Exploring Media and Message sessions often utilize artwork from VMFA’s Modern and Contemporary art collection. Before your visit to VMFA, introduce your students to the museum’s 21st Century gallery. Let them explore the space and imagine what they can find there!

When visual artists create artwork, they carefully consider the mode(s) that will most effectively communicate their ideas, leading to deliberate decisions about the media, or materials, they will use. Spending time to examine and explain their own ideas about such artwork encourages students to thoughtfully consider this relationship between media and message.
