“Maharaja” glimpses into the lavish lives of Indian royals

This spring, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will present the only East Coast opportunity to explore the art and material culture of India’s maharajas (“great kings”) from the early 18th century to the mid-20th century. Maharaja: The Splendors of India’s Great Kings, is an international touring exhibition organized by the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, that opens May 19 and continues through August 19, 2012.

75th Anniversary Gifts

More than two years ago, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Director Alex Nyerges proposed to his curatorial staff a special collection-building effort to mark the museum’s 75th anniversary year in 2011 – 75 gifts of art for 75 years of VMFA history. The goal was surpassed and the museum received 235 gifts throughout the year.

Rediscovered Artworks from the Barnett Aden Collection

Making History: Twentieth Century African American Art offers a fascinating glimpse at artistic production and patronage associated with the renowned Barnett Aden Gallery, operating in Washington, D.C., from 1943 to 1969. Opening March 31 and running through June 10, the exhibition features more than 50 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by 23 artists.
