Tiffany at the Maymont
Tuesday – Sundays, May 28 – August 15, 2010, 12:00 noon – 5:00 pm
To complement your visit to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ major international exhibition Tiffany: Color and Light, tour the opulent Maymont Mansion for an authentic glimpse into the Gilded Age world of Louis Comfort Tiffany, the master of American glass. Visitors will see important works by Tiffany and by his father’s famous firm Tiffany and Company that were acquired by James and Sallie Dooley at the turn of the twentieth century to adorn their 1893 residence. One of the great treasures of the Maymont Mansion is the stained glass window by Louis Comfort Tiffany’s firm Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company, later named Tiffany Studios. Soaring fifteen feet above Maymont’s grand stair case, the window is a luminous expression of the Art Nouveau style with swirling grape vines, angels and a central panel depicting Jesus entering a doorway and a banner reading Peace Be Unto this House. It is one of the largest residential Tiffany windows on public display in Virginia. Among the Dooleys’ many Tiffany and Company treasures is the remarkable, Viking-revival dressing table and chair, fashioned of sterling silver and narwhal tusks. This one-of-a-kind creation was featured in The Magazine Antiques’ April 2008 issue. For visitors touring Tiffany: Color and Light, the 100-acre Maymont estate is conveniently located in the vicinity of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in the heart of Richmond, Virginia. The Maymont Mansion will be a featured site in a state-wide driving tour and podcast sponsored by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
Suggested admission, $5 per person. For more information, phone 804.358.7166, ext. 329.
