Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat (2018; 79 min; Dir: Sara Driver)
Driver’s recent documentary of the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat’s 1970s formative years covers those heady days: pre-big art world, pre-Reagan and pre-AIDS. NYC was the scene of the burgeoning art and punk movement, and Driver lived it as well. Her film encompasses the work of a range of “downtown” figures with interviews of Jim Jarmusch, Vivienne Dick, Kenny Scharf, Fab 5 Freddy, and more!
