Valerie Sanson – Virginia Jewelry Artist Trunk Show

Early in her career, artist Valerie Sanson worked as a fashion coordinator for Richmond’s famed Thalhimer department stores. The retail experience she gained there, coupled with her own creative bent, later drove her to open one of the most imaginative home accessory and gift boutiques in Richmond: Lane Sanson. Her love of fashion soon inspired her to create “Painting with Stones”, an inventive line of necklaces, pins, rings, and cufflinks. “When wearing my jewelry,” Sanson says, “you simply can’t have a bad day!”

The Artist’s Choice: Intentions and Options

On this gallery exploration, personal interpretation along with artist intention will guide our discussion of various works of art. Examine how artistic choices encourage us to uncover meaning. Docent Debra Stoss will be your guide through this artistic discovery process.

How…do you draw flowers?

Join artist and educator Megan Liles Endy for a closer look at paintings of flowers in VMFA’s permanent collection. After a visit to the galleries, watch flowers come to life in the studio as Ms. Endy demonstrates drawing techniques using colored pencils and shows how the medium exhibits characteristics of both drawing and painting. Visitors also are given the opportunity to draw their own flowers after the demonstration.

3 in 30: African Traditions in Contemporary Art

Exploring three works by 20th- and 21st-century artists, Karen Getty, Docent and Tour Program Coordinator, shows how these artists refashion and implement historical visual content from Africa to bring greater cultural significance to the meaning.
