Forbidden City: Imperial Treasures from the Palace Museum, Beijing will offer the opportunity to experience nearly 200 exquisite objects – including portraits of emperors and empresses, court paintings, and religious sculptures—in its exclusive US venue. Forbidden City will illuminate life inside the ancient imperial palace during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Featured works include large portraits, costumes, furniture, court paintings, religious sculptures, and fine decorative arts such as bronzes, lacquer ware, and jade. This exhibition explores the significant roles of imperial rituals, court painting, imperial family life, and religion in the Forbidden City.
To fully convey the magnitude of the UNESCO World Heritage site that is the Forbidden City, which encompasses more than 900 buildings surrounded by soaring walls and a moat in the center of Beijing, 3D printing technology will not only detail architectural features of the city, but also offer museum-goers the immersive experience of passing through the Forbidden City at the height of its glory and splendor.
VMFA’s relationship with the Palace Museum and the debut of Forbidden City presents a remarkable opportunity for Virginia to explore 500 years of Chinese history and culture.
