It was a special evening for Canvas members who had the privilege of viewing a fabulous private art collection at the home of Jim Klaus and Brent Morris. Jim says, “I enjoyed the event because we had local talent, art lovers, Canvas members, gallery owners, and VMFA curators all together. That’s the reason why I love collecting art.”
For Jim, his interest in VMFA began with his grandmother who used to take him to the museum as a boy. He recalled that she was proud of being one of the founding members of The Council. When he purchased a historic home in the Fan district in the mid 1990’s, he slowly and steadily renovated the four-story house, all while collecting pictures to adorn the walls. He adds, “I wouldn’t say there was a method to these acquisitions. I only buy what I love and I’m particularly attracted to photographs.” A compelling story behind a picture is equally as appealing to his process. The collection consists of eighty percent Virginia based artists, which is unique.
The Sally Mann self-portrait holds a special place in Jim’s heart and living room. This acclaimed photographer originally donated the work to the Faison School art auction. It was Mann’s first ever published or exhibited self-portrait. Jim’s father, Philip Klaus, bought the picture at this event and ultimately gave it to him in 2004. Jim loves the story behind the Mann photograph and notes that the black edges surrounding the picture are also part of the artist’s concept.
The forty-five photograph installation aptly entitled 45 Days, 2013 certainly had its fair share of admirers at the party! Jim says, “William Wylie is a University of Virginia professor of photography and he created this beautiful piece of art. His work can also be seen at VMFA. These photographs were taken from Sol LeWitt’s villa, where he stayed during his Yale fellowship.” Jim purchased this eye-catching artwork from Page Bond, who was also in attendance.
The energy and enthusiasm of Canvas members, artists, gallery owners, curators was simply amazing. Many thanks again to Jim and Brent for treating us to an unforgettable evening!
